Watering Your Lawn the Right Way
Most of us think that lawn watering is a simple task, but nothing can be further from the truth. Just as lawns need sunlight and healthy soil to thrive, it also needs regular watering to survive.
There are many factors at play if you want your lawn to be healthy and green. Factors like the climate and soil types are impossible to control. However, one thing you can control is how you water it. There is a correct way to do it, and these simple steps are a guide on how to properly care for their lawn by watering it the right way.
Best Time to Water
The best time to water your lawn is early morning, before 10 AM. Due to the cooler temperatures in the morning, there is less evaporation. Thus, allowing more water to reach the roots. Even more, it cools the lawn during midday, which puts less stress on the grass. If your schedule makes this impossible, another best time is late in the afternoon. Also, avoid watering at night because a lawn that’s been wet overnight is a perfect breeding ground for fungus and other diseases
How Much Is Too Much?
Depending on the climate and the season, lawn-care experts would typically suggest watering your lawn two to three a week. But the answer to how often you should water is dependent on several factors, such as the type of soil. Over-watering and less watering are both not suitable for the grass. Watering at night can both result in fungus growing in your lawn and roots that aren’t strong enough to grow deeper. Thoroughly watering your lawn and allowing the water to soak down to the roots, then allow a few days to pass so the soil will dry out.
Consistency Is Key
You either let your lawn go dormant or water it consistently; there can’t be a middle ground. If you allow your grass to go brown, then water it again just enough to see it go green again, and then stop watering the lawn again. Doing that will be too hard on the grass. It drains a massive amount of the grass’s food reserves.
Water Uniformly
Investing in lawn sprinkler system and automatic timers is the right choice if you have a hectic schedule. However, you have to ensure that the water is being distributed evenly throughout your lawn. One way to test this is to place weighted paper cups at random spots in your yard, then let your sprinkler run for thirty minutes. After thirty minutes, check the water levels in the paper cups to see if they’re even. If not, then your lawn is not being watered uniformly.
How to Fertilize
Lawn-care experts suggest using a slow-release organic lawn fertilizer to give your lawn a constant feeding due to its slow nitrogen breakdown. It’s also advisable to fertilize the lawn at least three to four times a year. Hold off fertilizing during hot weather because it might burn your lawn. Lightly water and refrain from over-watering after fertilizing to allow the soil to absorb the fertilizer. Hold off fertilizing your lawn if the weather in your area is forecast with heavy rains.
Conclusion
You can give your lawn some TLC by ensuring that it is nourished by water correctly. Watering your turf the right way goes a long way, especially if you prefer to do it by yourself. And being surrounded by a lush and green grass turf completes the homely vibe that everybody wants to come home to after a long and busy day.
