Lawns don’t just contribute to your property’s aesthetic; they also help the environment by trapping carbon dioxide, reducing temperatures, and helping clean the air.
However, for lawns to continue contributing their benefits, they have to be adequately maintained. Mowing is one of the essential parts of maintaining your lawn. But the question that frequently comes up regarding mowing is, how often?
Most experts agree that mowing your lawn shouldn’t depend on your lawn’s last trim; it should depend on the length of the grass.
Usually, weekly mowing is the norm. However, some lawns need more frequent mowing as grass growth isn’t universal. That’s why cutting your lawn based on a fixed number of days isn’t ideal.
Another consensus in mowing your lawn is the one-third rule, where you cut the grass at least one-third of its height. Chopping the grass more than one-third of its height can stress the grass. Cutting your lawn too short can cause enough damage as letting it grow long.
Frequent mowing can be unhealthy for your lawn. If it grows too long, cut only one-third off on your next mowing session to gradually reduce the height.
Another adverse effect of cutting your lawn too short is developing weak root systems. If your lawn has a weak root system, it won’t be able to absorb fertilizer and water quickly. Three inches is the recommended height of grass so they can develop deep, strong roots.
The longer you let your lawn grow in height, the deeper its root system gets. A deeper root system means a healthier lawn that’s more resistant to stress and drought.
Having a lawn that’s around three inches in height will also reduce the number of weeds since the lawn’s height reduces the amount of sunlight that reaches the weed seeds. Longer blades for your grass will also ensure a greater surface area for photosynthesis.
Ensure that your mower always has sharp blades. Having dull blades will rip the grass instead of cutting it, and ripped grass is vulnerable to diseases.
You can also do grasscycling, which is leaving the grass cuttings after mowing. These clippings will break down in a short amount of time and will act as free organic fertilizer.
The most suitable time of the day to mow your lawn is mid-morning. During this time, the morning dew has completely evaporated while the sun isn’t at its highest.
Before mowing your lawn, ensure that there isn’t anything hidden underneath the grass that could obstruct the mower’s movement. It’s also ideal to wear closed shoes, sunglasses, earplugs, and sunscreen.
These are the essential things that you need to remember when mowing your lawn. Doing them regularly will ensure that your lawn is always in good shape.
